This machines respective Pinside and IPDB rankings seem harsh, but understandable. The game is endearing, albeit slightly easy. The playing field takes the appearance of a deck on a ship, and the upper mini-playfield is pretty cool. Thats about where the fun ends, though, with the animal kicker feature pretty bland.
While games like Dracula and White Water feel punishing and difficult, Popeye is on the other end of the spectrum. Anyone new to pinball is swiftly pointed in the direction of this machine in our arcade, its really forgiving and a nice, gentle way to break new players in to what can be a really inaccessible set of games.
The game is fun and pretty interesting to look it. The mini playfield is fantastic, but the actual gameplay once youre there is pretty lacklustre. We rated this ahead of Getaway II almost entirely because it felt more unique and, as though it occupied its very own niche in our collection.
